March 10, 2026 at the Carson City Senior Center at 1:30PM-Lights… Camera…Sierras. The Eastern Sierra and Lone Pine region has long served as Hollywood’s rugged double for the American West—and far beyond. This history slideshow explores over a century of cinematic legacy, from early silent Westerns to blockbuster hits like Iron Man and cult classics like Tremors. With more than 400 productions filmed in the iconic Alabama Hills, the slideshow reveals how this dramatic landscape has stood in for India in Gunga Din (1939), frontier towns in countless cowboy epics, and even alien worlds. Archival photos, behind-the-scenes stories, and vintage posters bring to life the area’s transformation into a living backlot, while honoring the local people who helped shape its film heritage. Whether you’re a film buff or a lover of desert drama, this visual journey captures the magic of a place where the West was—and still is won!

March 22 at Minden Mill Distilling at 1PM-The Wedding of the Waters. In October 1937, Catholic priest Father John Crowley staged one of the most spectacular celebrations ever to unfold in the Eastern Sierra—a three‑day extravaganza later remembered as the legendary “Wedding of the Waters.” More than 50,000 spectators lined mountain roads and desert valleys as a ceremonial gourd of water made its dramatic journey from the highest lake in the United States to the lowest point in the western hemisphere. The procession was pure pageantry: Hopalong Cassidy rode in, an Indianapolis 500 champion took the wheel, the famed 20‑Mule Team rumbled through the dust, and a cast of characters straight out of Hollywood and history joined the parade. Even the President of the United States and the Governor of California played their parts in this improbable civic romance. Join David & Gayle for a lively 55‑minute trip back in time as they revisit Father Crowley’s audacious vision and the unforgettable celebration that briefly united mountains, desert, and imagination in one grand Eastern Sierra spectacle.

March 29. 2026 at Minden Mill Distilling at 1PM-Difficult Times… Extraordinary Lives. Using extensive research and seldom scene images, historians David & Gayle Woodruff delve into the ‘human heart’ of Manzanar Internment Camp, revealing a few little‑known stories of Japanese Americans whose lives were upended and reshaped behind its barbed‑wire horizon. Through stark moments of loss, flashes of defiance, and the fragile rituals that helped people hold onto identity during a very challenging time, these vignettes illuminate the extraordinary resilience of ordinary individuals. These true tales of history remind us that Manzanar was not merely a wartime policy—it was a crucible of human endurance, dignity, and quiet, unyielding hope. A 55-minute moving and reflective slideshow.
